- One way I see reinhabitation and decolonization happening throughout the text is the bringing together of generations to talk about land and water rights which is essentially the younger generation talking the time to listen to the older generation speak about the various traditions of the group. This dialogue between generations is a huge opportunity for the Cree youth involved, as it gives them knowledge of the land that their people have inhabited for generations, and lets them feel proud to call it home. As the text goes onto explain, this pride in the land leads to a greater sense of unity and community between the people, and gives the youth motivation to be a “self-determining people.” Making the bond between the youth and the land stronger will only lead to the culture of these people to continue to remain strong in the generations to come.
- As I am a social studies major, I believe that place is a very important part of my day to day life. The text makes it clear that traditions and culture depend very much on place, and therefore the traditions and cultures I would teach in a social studies class would be as a result of place. Of course, to truly understand place and the First Nations traditions associated with place is something that is quite difficult for me as a non-First Nations person to articulate to my students. As a result, I would borrow this idea of having the younger generation speak to the older generation from the text and adapt it to the classroom. I would try to get an elder from whatever area I happen to be teaching in to come into the class to discuss with the students place and what it means for the various traditions. Ideally, I would have the elder come in a few times during the year to revisit the idea to try and help the students really grasp the concept, as I believe it is an important concept to understand. This visit from the elder would also very much be for my own benefit, as I would like to expand my knowledge on the topic as well.

Great post! I liked when you said, “The text makes it clear that traditions and culture depend very much on place, and therefore the traditions and cultures I would teach in a social studies class would be as a result of place”. I think that incorporating place into a classroom is a great idea and could work really well for social studies. I also really liked your idea of bringing an elder into the classroom.
